BTS oversized t-shirt: getting the size, the drape and the look right
5 min read
A BTS oversized t-shirt should have dropped shoulders, a wide body and sleeves that reach towards the elbow, but it should still look intentional rather than borrowed. Choose the size from the chest width and length in centimetres, not the label: stay in your usual size for a relaxed drape and go up one only if you want a long, dress-like fit. Then balance the volume with something slimmer or more structured below.
What oversized actually means
An oversized tee is not simply a t-shirt in a bigger size. It is cut on a different pattern: the shoulder seam drops down onto the upper arm, the body is straighter and wider, and the sleeves are longer and roomier. That is why a well-made oversized M looks relaxed on purpose, while a regular L just looks too big.
This matters when you shop for a BTS design. Embroidery on the chest sits a little lower on an oversized cut, and the extra width gives a large design room to breathe. A design embroidered on both front and back, or on the cuffs of the sleeves, also reads better when the fabric is not stretched tight across the body.
- Dropped shoulders: the seam sits a few centimetres below your natural shoulder.
- Straight, wide body: no shaping at the waist.
- Longer sleeves: usually halfway between shoulder and elbow, or lower.
- Length: typically covers the hips, without reaching mid-thigh.
Size up or stay true? A simple rule
Because the oversize is already built into the pattern, most people should start with their usual size. Going up one size gives a longer, slouchier silhouette that works as a t-shirt dress or over leggings and cycling shorts. Going up two sizes rarely looks good: the shoulders slide too far down and the neckline starts to gape.
If you are petite, the length matters more than the width. A tee that covers your hips completely can shorten your legs visually, so a front tuck becomes your best friend. If you are tall or broad-shouldered, check the length first, because a size that fits your chest may end just above the waistband.
Three measurements to check before you buy
Take a t-shirt you already love wearing loose, lay it flat on a table and measure it. Then compare those numbers with the measurements on the product page. Many of our oversized pieces show the measurements in centimetres directly in the product photos, so you can compare them side by side.
Keep in mind that 100% cotton feels soft and structured at the same time, and it holds its shape well, which is exactly what you want for a tee that is meant to hang rather than cling.
- Chest width, armpit to armpit: this decides how roomy it feels.
- Length, from the highest point of the shoulder to the hem: this decides where it ends on your body.
- Sleeve length from the shoulder seam: this decides whether it looks oversized or just baggy.
Five ways to wear it that never look sloppy
The secret of every good oversized outfit is contrast: one loose piece, one more fitted or structured piece. Here are five combinations that work for very different days.
- Front tuck with wide-leg jeans: tuck just the front few centimetres into the waistband to show where your waist is, and keep the back loose.
- Over a long-sleeve top: a thin long-sleeve tee in a contrasting colour underneath turns an oversized t-shirt into an autumn and winter piece.
- With a midi skirt: a satin or pleated skirt and trainers make the look softer, perfect for a coffee date or a listening party.
- Under an open shirt or overshirt: the embroidery stays visible and the layers add warmth.
- Concert day: knotted at the side with cargo trousers or a denim skirt, plus a crossbody bag that keeps your hands free.
Picking a BTS design for a loose fit
Oversized tees are great for designs with personality, because the fabric frames them rather than distorting them. A portrait of all seven members, a lyric or a reference to a solo era all have room to shine.
Ask yourself how often you want to wear it. A subtle design goes to work and to the supermarket without a second thought; a bigger, bolder one becomes your concert and fan-event piece. Neither is wrong, but knowing which one you want saves you from a tee that stays folded in the drawer.
If you are buying for someone else, the oversized cut is the safest choice of all: it forgives a size that is slightly off far better than a fitted tee does.

FAQ
Should I size up in a BTS oversized t-shirt?
Usually not. The oversized fit is already in the pattern, so your usual size gives a relaxed drape. Size up only if you want a longer, dress-like look.
How do I keep an oversized tee from looking sloppy?
Pair it with something slimmer or more structured, such as straight jeans, a midi skirt or leggings, and try a front tuck to show your waist.
Can I wear an oversized t-shirt in winter?
Yes. Layer a thin long-sleeve top underneath and an open shirt, cardigan or coat on top, so the embroidery still shows.
Are Mima&Lulù⁷ oversized tees licensed BTS merch?
No. They are fanmade pieces inspired by BTS and embroidered in Italy, not affiliated with BTS, HYBE or BigHit Music.
