BTS Members' Symbols: The Images Fans Link to Each of the Seven

5 min read

BTS members have no official symbols, but each of them has images that fans recognise instantly, mostly taken from their solo music: the wildflower and indigo for RM, the astronaut for Jin, Agust D for Suga, the jack in the box for j-hope, the emerald garden for Jimin, the winter bear for V and gold for Jung Kook. For the group as a whole, the symbols are the purple heart and the number seven.

Where member symbols come from

There is no official chart that gives each member a symbol, and that is a good thing: the images fans use came from the members themselves. They come from three places. The first is their solo music, where titles like The Astronaut or Golden turned into instant references. The second is their everyday life as fans know it, from pets to hobbies. The third is fandom culture: animal nicknames and BT21, the characters the members designed with LINE FRIENDS in 2017.

Of the three, solo music gives the strongest symbols, because anyone can check them and they mean something to the member. That is why we use it as the backbone of the list below. Animal emojis are a separate topic, and we cover them in our guide to the members' representative emojis.

The group's symbols in one minute

Before going member by member, three symbols belong to all seven. The purple heart comes from Borahae, "I purple you", the word V coined on 13 November 2016. The number seven stands for the seven members and the idea of OT7, one true seven. The logo, two shapes that look like open doors, was introduced in 2017, when the group also linked the name BTS to the phrase Beyond The Scene.

If you want one symbol that every ARMY reads the same way, it is one of these three. Member symbols are more personal, and more fun to discover.

Member by member: the symbols fans recognise

This list is our reading, built from titles and facts that fans can check. Each member has more than one image, so we give the clearest one first.

  • RM: the wildflower and the colour indigo, from his solo album Indigo and its closing song Wildflower. The moon also belongs to him, from his song Moonchild, and so does nature in general: he is famous for walks in parks and museum visits.
  • Jin: the astronaut, from his solo single The Astronaut, plus the tuna from Super Tuna, his playful song about fishing. Both are as much about his humour as about his music.
  • Suga: Agust D, his solo name, and everything around it, from the traditional imagery of Daechwita to the countdown idea of D-Day. Fans of his softer side add the piano.
  • j-hope: the jack in the box, from his album Jack in the Box, and the street, from Hope on the Street, which tells his story as a dancer. The sun works too, because his stage name means hope.
  • Jimin: the emerald garden, from Smeraldo Garden Marching Band on his album MUSE, and the face, from his first album FACE. Smeraldo is the Italian word for emerald, which makes it a favourite of ours.
  • V: the winter bear, from his self-written song Winter Bear, and Yeontan, his dog, one of the most loved animals in the fandom. Rainy days and layovers come from his solo album Layover.
  • Jung Kook: gold, from his solo album Golden, and the number seven twice over, for the group and for his single Seven. The golden maknae nickname, for the youngest member who is good at everything, makes gold even more fitting.

How to read a symbol you see on a fan

Most symbols work like a password. A small astronaut on a bag means nothing to a stranger, but another ARMY will often ask "Jin?" straight away. That is the whole charm, and the reason why a symbol usually says more than a name.

Be careful with the ones that overlap. Gold can mean Jung Kook, but a gold detail can also simply be a gold detail. The number seven means the group, but on a Jung Kook piece it can also mean his single. When in doubt, look at what sits next to it: a symbol plus a song lyric or a member's initials is never ambiguous.

Choosing a symbol for a gift or an outfit

If you are choosing for someone else, a few simple checks avoid most mistakes.

  • Pick a symbol from an era they love, not just from their bias: a fan of early RM may feel more for Moonchild than for Indigo.
  • Prefer images that last. A song title stays meaningful for years; an in-joke from one live stream can fade.
  • If you do not know their bias, choose a group symbol: purple or the seven never miss.
  • For everyday wear, a small symbol on the chest, a sleeve or a hat is easier to wear than a large print.

Symbols we turned into embroidery

At Mima&Lulù⁷ we are two ARMY in Rome with an embroidery machine, and almost every design we make starts from one of these symbols. Our pieces are fanmade, inspired by BTS and not affiliated with BTS, HYBE or BigHit Music, and they are embroidered in Italy. Each one is ready in about 7 days from payment, plus courier time, with free shipping over 119 € in the EU and over 89 € in Italy.

  • 'Wildflower' oversize sweatshirt, from 47,90 €: RM's flower, with embroidery on both sleeves, 50% cotton and 50% polyester, sizes S to 2XL.
  • ASTRONAUT oversize sweatshirt or t-shirt, from 34,90 €: Jin's symbol, in a cotton t-shirt or a cotton and polyester sweatshirt.
  • Daechwita oversize sweatshirt, from 44,90 €: for fans of Suga's Agust D side, sizes S to 2XL.
  • Seven oversize sweatshirt or t-shirt, from 36,90 €: Jung Kook's single and the group's number in one design.
