What is the symbol of BTS ARMY? The signs every fan recognises
5 min read
The main symbol of BTS ARMY is the colour purple, together with the purple heart, from Borahae, the “I purple you” that V coined on 13 November 2016. ARMY also has its own logo, introduced in 2017 as the mirror image of the BTS door-shaped logo, so that the two read as doors opening towards each other. Around them sit the ARMY Bomb lightstick, the whale and the number seven.
The short answer: purple and the purple heart
If you had to pick one symbol that every ARMY in the world reads the same way, it would be purple. It comes from Borahae, a word V invented at a fan meeting on 13 November 2016 by joining bora, Korean for purple, and saranghae, I love you. Purple is the last colour of the rainbow, he explained, so it stands for a love that lasts a long time.
Online, the same idea lives in the purple heart. It closes captions, replies and fan letters, and next to a name it works as a quiet badge: this person is ARMY. We have a full guide to Borahae if you want the word itself explained in depth; here we look at the wider family of symbols that grew around it.
The ARMY logo: the other half of the doors
In 2017 BTS changed its logo. The new one is made of two shapes that look like doors standing open, and with it came a second reading of the name, Beyond The Scene. At the same time the fandom received a logo of its own: the same two doors, but turned the other way.
The idea is that the two logos belong together. Put side by side, the BTS doors and the ARMY doors face each other, as if the group and its fans were walking through to meet halfway. It is one of the reasons the fandom feels the logo is partly theirs, and why many fans see it as the official symbol of ARMY.
One thing worth knowing: both logos belong to the group and its company. They appear on official goods, and fan-made items should not copy them. Fans who want to show the same meaning on a bag or a sweatshirt usually choose purple, a lyric or the seven instead.
The ARMY Bomb and the purple ocean
The ARMY Bomb is the official BTS lightstick, a round light on a handle that fans bring to concerts. It has been updated several times over the years, and at shows the lights can be controlled together, so that a whole stadium changes colour at the same moment.
When tens of thousands of them glow purple, fans call it the purple ocean. You can see it again on the Arirang World Tour, which started on 9 April 2026 in Goyang and runs until March 2027. For many ARMY, the ARMY Bomb is less a gadget than a symbol: it is how the crowd says it is there.
It is sold only through official channels, so if you are buying one as a gift, check the seller carefully. We do not make lightsticks: our work is embroidery on clothes and bags.
The whale, the seven and other fan symbols
Not every ARMY symbol has an official origin. Some grew out of songs and fandom habits, and they are just as recognisable to other fans.
- The whale: from Whalien 52, a 2015 BTS song about a lonely whale whose call no other whale can hear. Fans turned it around: with ARMY, nobody sings alone. A small whale on a phone case or a bag is a gentle, discreet ARMY sign.
- The number seven: the seven members, and the idea of OT7, one true seven. It often appears as a small raised ⁷ at the end of usernames.
- Purple details: a ribbon, a scarf, a hair clip or a bag charm, worn to queues, fan cafés and concerts so that other fans can spot you.
- Lyrics: lines from songs that look like ordinary phrases to everyone else, and are instantly recognisable to ARMY.
How ARMY use these symbols to recognise each other
The beauty of ARMY symbols is that they work like a password. A purple heart in a bio, a whale keyring or a ⁷ in a username says nothing to a stranger, but another fan reads it at once. Many friendships in the fandom started with exactly that: someone noticing a detail on a train, at school or at the office and asking, a little shyly, “Are you ARMY?”
If you are new to the fandom, you do not need all of them. Start with the one that feels most like you: purple if you want something everyone understands, the whale if you like a story behind the sign, the seven if you love all seven members equally. And if you are choosing for someone else, a symbol for the whole group never misses, because it does not depend on their bias.

FAQ
What is the official symbol of ARMY?
The closest thing to an official symbol is the ARMY logo introduced in 2017: the BTS door-shaped logo turned the other way, so the two logos face each other. The colour purple is the symbol fans use most.
Why is purple the ARMY colour?
Because of Borahae, the word V coined on 13 November 2016. He explained that purple is the last colour of the rainbow, so it means loving each other for a long time.
What does the whale mean for ARMY?
It comes from Whalien 52, a 2015 BTS song about a lonely whale. Fans use the whale to say that with ARMY nobody is alone.
Is the ARMY Bomb a symbol or just a lightstick?
Both. It is the official BTS lightstick, and when thousands glow purple at a concert, the purple ocean they create has become a symbol of the fandom in its own right.
