BTS Member Colors: What Is Real and How to Pick Yours
5 min read
BTS do not have official member colors: unlike many K-pop groups, the seven were never given one colour each, and the charts you find online are fan-made and often disagree. The one colour that belongs to everyone is purple, from Borahae, the word V coined in 2016. If you want a colour for your bias, the most meaningful way is to take it from their own music, like Indigo for RM or Golden for Jung Kook.
Short answer: no official colours
Many K-pop groups give each member a colour for lightsticks, merchandise and fan projects. BTS never had a fixed system like that. If you search for BTS member colors you will find dozens of charts, and if you compare two of them you will usually see different answers for the same member.
That is not because one chart is right and the others are wrong. It is because each one reflects how a group of fans sees the members, often based on a single era, a photo shoot or a running joke. They can be fun, but none of them is the answer, and it is worth knowing that before you build a whole outfit or gift around one.
The colour everyone shares: purple
There is one colour that every ARMY agrees on, and it is purple. It comes from Borahae, "I purple you", a word V coined at a fan meeting on 13 November 2016. He explained that purple is the last colour of the rainbow, so it stands for loving and trusting each other for a long time.
Purple is not one member's colour: it is the colour of the seven together and of the fandom around them. That is why a purple detail works for any bias, and why it is the safest choice if you are dressing for a concert or buying a gift and are not sure who someone's favourite is.
A better idea: colours from their own music
If you want a colour that really says something about one member, look at their solo work instead of a random chart. Several titles already contain a colour or an image you can wear, and a fan who knows the music will recognise the reference straight away. Treat this as a palette of ideas, not a rule: it is our reading, built from titles everyone can check.
- RM: indigo, from his solo album Indigo. Deep blue-violet, close to ARMY purple, easy to wear every day.
- Jin: soft pink is the colour fans link to him most often, and his solo song The Astronaut suggests night blue and silver.
- Suga: black, white and grey suit the sharp, monochrome mood of his Agust D side.
- j-hope: blue, from his solo release Blue Side, a gentle choice that pairs well with denim.
- Jimin: emerald green, from Smeraldo Garden Marching Band on his album MUSE; smeraldo is the Italian word for emerald.
- V: purple, because he is the one who gave Borahae to the fandom, with wintry greys if you love Winter Bear.
- Jung Kook: gold, from his solo album Golden.
Why the fan charts disagree so much
A member who wore a red suit in one music video might be red on one chart and blue on another because of a different era. Colours also get attached to members through emojis, animal characters or jokes from variety shows, and those change from year to year. Translations add more confusion: a chart made in one language travels, gets edited, and comes back with different choices.
So when you see a confident post that says "Jimin's colour is X", read it as "some fans like X for Jimin". If you are making a fan banner or a group outfit, agree on the colours with your friends rather than looking for an official list that does not exist.
How to wear a member colour without overdoing it
A head-to-toe single colour can look like a costume. In everyday life, one or two touches are enough, and they will still be clear to other fans.
- Keep the base neutral: black, white, grey or denim, then add the colour in one piece.
- Use accessories: a bucket hat, a bag, socks or a hair clip carry a colour without taking over.
- Mix your bias colour with purple, so the outfit says both "my bias" and "OT7".
- For a group of friends going together, give each person one member's colour from the palette above and take a photo in order of age.
Pieces that tell the story better than a colour
A colour is a hint; a title or an album name is a sentence. That is how we design at Mima&Lulù⁷: two ARMY in Rome with an embroidery machine, turning BTS music into embroidery made in Italy. Our pieces are fanmade, inspired by BTS and not affiliated with BTS, HYBE or BigHit Music, and each one is ready in about 7 days from payment, plus courier time.
